"Tao Sing"
ebony, acrylic and electronics

completed October 1997

12" X 8.5" X 3"

This interactive piece responds when you pass your hand slowly over it in a slow gesture that looks like a blessing or a magicians move.  It makes the sound of a (sampled) Tibetan bell, and displays one of several randomly selected quotes excerpted or adapted from the Tao de Ching.

The title is a word play on the "dowsing" stick in the middle of the ebony base that refers to the divination nature of the piece.  Also the concept of Tao "singing" with the sound of the Tibetan bell.

There is a small enclosure with a hinged lid in the bottom to contain
sacred objects, making this a contemporary form of an altar.

Close up showing the Basic Stamp II microcontroller that contains
the code and quotes.  Back view shows the hand wiring.

This piece is not for sale
